How to Understand the Image of a Black Hole

    We have just seen the first image of a black hole, the supermassive black hole in the galaxy M87 with a mass 6.5 billion times that of our sun. But what is that image really showing us?
    This is an awesome paper on the topic by J.P. Luminet:

    Using my every day intuition I wondered: will we see the "shadow" of the black hole even if we're looking edge on at the accretion disk? The answer is yes because the black hole warps space-time, so even if we wouldn't normally be able to see the back of the accretion disk, we can in this case because its light is bent up and over the black hole. Similarly we can see light from the bottom of the back of the accretion disk because it's bent under the bottom of the black hole. Plus there are additional images from light that does a half turn around the black hole leading to the inner rings.
    What about the black hole "shadow" itself? Well initially I thought it can't be an image of the event horizon because it's so much bigger (2.6 times bigger). But if you trace back the rays, you find that for every point in the shadow, there is a corresponding ray that traces back to the event horizon. So in fact from our one observing location, we see all sides of the event horizon simultaneously! In fact infinitely many of these images, accounting for the virtually infinite number of times a photon can orbit the black hole before falling in. The edge of the shadow is due to the photon sphere - the radius at which light goes around in closed orbits. If a light ray coming in at an oblique angle just skims the photon sphere and then travels on to our telescopes, that is the closest 'impact parameter' possible, and it occurs at sqrt(27)/2*r_s

Can 2 atoms occupy the same at the same time? They can if separated by time! Due to the slowing and almost stopping of time due to a black hole, the curvature of time is extremely excessive, causing matter to be buffered in time, stacking up on itself only separated by the curvature of time. Hence more matter can seemingly occupy the same space. (Infinite time curvature equals infinite density, like before the big bang?) time-factor-theory.

question why is it we do not see the jets or the point of where the jets come out of the black hole? Do not tell me it is the size since that is a non-argument. We would see the points of where it comes out. I also know those jets are many light years across so really huge and the image is only a few arcseconds across. Either way, we should see the point where those jets come out. Sure the image is fuzzy so it could be we do not have powerful enough telescopes to see that detail but I have to truly wonder seeing scientist have had a baseline that was a little incorrect, to begin with and just carries over, since the computer software that created this image from the radio image had to be based off something

Hello Veritasium....that is an exceptional explanation of the picture I just have one question. Why is the acretion disk a planar disk and not a sphere? Since black hole is in the process of ingesting everything around it why would it only be in a single plane? Moreover if it was a sphere we woild have never been able to see the black hole as it would always be shrouded in that sphere isn't it?

He's discussing light that just grazes the 2.6 Schwartschild radius, and shows how it loops around. Wouldn't the black hole then work like a gravity assist to photons? And since photons are already moving at the speed of light, getting a gravity assist... well, fill in the thought there.

1.) This is not a true Image like common understanding, this is a artificial reconstruction due to missing data. 2.) the “image” looks like a torus. Due to the situation that 99,9% of all matter in the galaxy is plasma, it really looks like a so called “plasma focus” or “Plasmoid” 3.) the jets: theoretical SL’s doesn’t emit something like jets seen in M87. A plamafocus is a natural source of a bidirectional jet. 4.) SL’s are a theoretical product operating with infinity. This is physically complete nonsense. 5) a Plasmafokus is electromagnetic extremely active and the electromagnetic force is much, much higher than gravity. You can simulate this and put gravity to the Modell or not and you will see it doesn’t matter 😁

Who said they even exist it's a theory or just made up story .. oh in the center of our galaxy is one ! That's bs.. a Black holes do not exist! Telescop didnt captured images of black hole it's CGI officially confirmed.. We don't know what is in the center of our galaxy! We never saw our galaxy above galaxy to have full picture of it, there is no real picture of it. But imagination of theory. There are no real photos of other galaxies. It could be something inside of our own galaxy. Maybe a theory is ; we are in space not inside galaxy. Maybe there are no other galaxies at all but only space. Theories.. I remembered super nova from few years ago, and apperently that super nova is not 5 years old right now, its 12m + 5 years old! So we see something that already happend? Does that mean we don't see in real time, we see past first? On small distance it's not noticable becouse of high speed of light but on distance that is 12 million light years away, just like this super nova from 5 years ago (12m + 5), is noticable on paper but not in our mind becouse we always forget fact that light have speed. So no matter what stuff first happen and then we see? This blow my mind By the way to see how that super nova looks now you will have to wait 12m + 5 years :0
